Pregnancy termination

Pregnancy termination and legal issues

Magnolia clinic supports women seeking termination or abortion of an unplanned pregnancy. The clinic is based in Hobart, Tasmania. Magnolia clinic can provide medical termination of pregnancy with medication only, or can arrange surgical termination. Surgical terminations are not performed at the clinic and are subject to hospital availability.

In Tasmania women may seek an abortion by choice up until 16 weeks of pregnancy. Medical termination can only be performed until 9 weeks of pregnancy. After 9 weeks women require a surgical termination of pregnancy. Women consulting the clinic from outside Tasmania will be treated according to the law of their location  at the time of their consultation.

Pre-termination ultrasound

Before any termination of pregnancy can proceed it is a legal requirement that the woman have an ultrasound to accurately date the pregnancy, and exclude an ectopic pregnancy where the pregnancy is not in the normal location in the uterus.

This ultrasound can be performed at your first visit at the clinic if you attend in person.

Ultrasound may be arranged by your GP prior to attending Magnolia clinic, or you can contact the clinic to ask us to refer you to an external ultrasound provider prior to your first visit.

Medical termination of pregnancy

Medical termination of pregnancy can be performed until 9 weeks of pregnancy. Women are prescribed a series of medications over two days which result in expulsion of the pregnancy. Medical termination allows women to remain in their own home and may be prescribed via telemedicine if women can't attend Hobart in person.

Costs: Medical termination requires two consultations.

  • The first consultation assesses the woman's eligibility for medical termination and medication is prescribed if eligible for this method. The cost is $250 if an ultrasound is required and $200 if the woman has already had an ultrasound prior to the visit.

  • A second consultation is required 3-4  weeks later to ensure that the termination has completed. The cost is $100.

  • The medication must be obtained from a pharmacy. It costs approximately $40 for women with a Medicare card (less for Health Care Card holders). For women without Medicare eligibility the medication is approximately $300 with some women able to receive some reimbursement from their health insurance.

Surgical termination of pregnancy

Surgical termination involves a short operation of approximately 15 minutes duration in which the pregnancy is removed the uterus.  It is performed in hospital under a general anaesthetic. Surgical termination is the only option offered by Magnolia clinic for termination of pregnancies between 9 and 16 weeks gestation.

Costs:  Surgical termination costs may vary depending on women's personal and financial circumstances. Women seeking this option should use the contact form to discuss their individual situation.

  • The first consultation assesses the woman's eligibility for surgical termination. If appropriate a surgical date is booked and consent obtained. The cost of this consultation is $250 if an ultrasound is required and $200 if the woman has already had an ultrasound prior to the visit.

  • The cost of the surgical termination varies depending on whether a patient has health insurance which will cover the procedure and other individual circumstances. This can be discussed prior to women making their appointment.
